The Miracles of Ashwagandha Known for Millennia.


Ayurveda, which translates from sanskrit to "the science of life" is an ancient form of alternative medicine that began and has been practiced in India for over 3000 year. So, when I learned that Ashwagandha is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, it peaked my interest. Anything that can stand the test of time for over 3000 years warrants a deeper dive.


Like a deity, the Ashwagandha tree goes by many names including withania somnifera, Indian ginseng, poison gooseberry, or winter cherry. It also has has a prolific repertoire of reported benefits, however I'll only focus in this article on its its most common and trusted psychoactive uses.


This ancient medicinal herb is in the Solanaceae or nightshade family.


Solanaceae comes from the Latin verb solare, which means"to soothe", which may be indicative of Ashwangandha's effect on the brain and cognitive health.

While it may seem magical, Ashwagandha's real power is chemical. The herb is classified as an adaptogen, which means it may help you manage stress, but is also known for its ability to boost brain power and battle the effects of depression and anxiety. Many of the biologically active constituents in Ashwagandha like alkaloids, steroidal lactones, sitoindosides, acylsterylglucosides and saponins are known to help reduce stress. 1


Taken as a supplement, Ashwagandha may help alleviate stress and anxiety.
