Yerba Mate: The Genius Energy Herb
Yerba Mate, or lex paraguariensis, has a mystical and fascinating rich history that dates back to pre-colombian times among the Guaraní and Tupi tribes of Northern Argentina, Southern Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. Some believe it was a gift the natives called Caa from the goddess of the moon (Yari). Other sources attribute it to a fair-skinned God called Pa’ I Shume. It was even used as currency for trade among tribes. Either way, it's health benefits are certainly heavenly.
When consumed in its traditional form, yerba mate is a social drink that's shared among friends and strangers alike. In the old days, people drank it in a "rueda"; a circle of family and friends that would sip it dry, refill and pass it on in a completely ritualistic manner. Rejecting a sip of mate from anyone was considered strongly offensive, that is before Covid-19.
The spread of Covid-19 has largely diminished the social side of Yerba Mate in recent months, but not its benefits nor its more private consumption. Million across the world consume it as an alternative to coffee because of its power to create mental alertness, physical energy and high spirits without the jittery effects of an espresso. While global Yerba Mate awareness still pails in comparison to that of tea and coffee, its a favorite among naturalists (and some geniuses!) who understand its medicinal and health benefits.
Yerba Mate leaf extract is a primary ingredient in self Self+Supplements, Immunity + Energy powder.
Yerba Mate is a clean trusted and multi-functional ingredient to support a healthy immunity and energy, with benefits of caffeine but without the negative effects.
While not officially classified as an adaptogenic herb, it does meet the criteria given it is non-toxic and helps the body resist physical chemical and biological stressors. Adaptogens like Ashwagandha (in Self+Supplements Immunity + Unwind) have been used for millennia in Ayurvedic healing, and growing rapidly in awareness today.1, 2 Mate's secret may be in its rich content of saponins (5 in total), that are found in nearly all adaptogenic herbs.
Yerba Mate is in self+supplements because it has stood the test of time and is trusted by millions around the world, like every other ingredient we use. That's a tribute to its effectiveness and safety. Enjoy!
